Hamburg (dpa / lno) - For 100 years, a bronze lion was enthroned on the grave of Carl Hagenbeck, the founder of the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg.

Seven years ago, however, the massive figure was stolen by strangers.

Now the "Trieste" lion has been reassembled, at least as a replica, on Hagenbeck's grave site.

On Monday, the figure created by the sculptor Michael Kaul from photos and cast in Berlin was placed back at the grave site.

Also present was Hagenbeck's great-grandson Claus Carl Hagenbeck, who had campaigned for the restoration.

Trieste was considered a favorite animal of the zoo founder, who died in 1913.
