Kellmünz an der Iller (dpa / lby) - A broken bicycle chain has become the undoing of a suspected arsonist in Swabia.
Four walkers had watched the 62-year-old as he fled from a smoking place on a railway embankment in Kellmünz an der Iller on Sunday, the police announced on Monday.
One of the witnesses then went out on fire and informed the police that another had run after the suspect.
The 62-year-old's escape ended after about a kilometer when the chain on his bike broke.
The witness caught up with the alleged arsonist and held him at the scene until the police arrived.
According to the police, the 62-year-old could also be responsible for four more fires on the railway embankment in recent weeks.
During the fire-fighting work, the train traffic on the Illertalbahn had to be temporarily stopped.
The police are now investigating the man for property damage caused by arson, he denies the allegations.
