Munich (AP) - Rudi Völler sees in his former DFB teammate Lothar Matthäus a suitable candidate to succeed national coach Joachim Löw in the summer.

"It is very clear that Lothar would be qualified for it," said the managing director of Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday on TV broadcaster Sky.

"Lothar, he can do it. But like the others who are in the raffle, they can of course all", added Völler, who became world champion with Matthäus in 1990 and played in the national soccer team.

Völler praised the German record international player, who celebrated his 60th birthday on Sunday, that Matthäus had a "great career" as a player behind him and, among other things, showed that he was qualified for the task.

"He was not only a world footballer, he was our captain and he had a career that is second to none," said Völler.
