• On 10 March 2020, three of the four parties in the majority in Västerås, the Social Democrats, the Liberals and the Green Party, announced that, regardless of their previous position on the issue, they agreed on a closure of the airport.



    The fourth party in the majority cooperation, the Center Party, stayed out and said that the whole thing was premature.


    The protests were loud, not only from political parties but also from some westerners, entrepreneurs and businesses out at the airport.


  • In May 2020, a decision was made in the municipal board that the municipal airport company and operations must be wound up by 31 December 2022. (S), (L) and (MP) voted through the proposal with the support of the Left Party.


  • Meanwhile, the question of a referendum begins to be pursued and residents of Västerås start collecting names.


  • In June 2020, the City Council would decide on the closure.

    But after a six-hour meeting, a minority referendum went through because more than a third of the politicians during the meeting - (M), (KD), (SD) and (C) - requested it.

    The moderates said that the issue was not sufficiently investigated.


  • In August 2020, the matter was back on the municipal board's table, and once again a decision was made to close the airport.


  • Ahead of KF's meeting in September, C, M, KD and SD want the item on closure removed from the agenda pending a possible referendum, as there was no agreement on the issue, it remained.



    After a historic and record-breaking KF, it was decided that the airport should be closed.

    After just over 3.5 hours of debate, the matter was put to the vote.

    By then, the meeting had lasted for almost 12 hours.

    32 members voted in favor of closing the airport, while 29 members voted against.


  • Later that month, the People's Initiative for the Future of Västerås Airport submitted more than 18,000 signatures to politicians.


  • A referendum on Västerås Airport is scheduled for Sunday, March 21, 2021. “Do you want the City of Västerås to wind up its operations in the airport company?

    Yes / No ”will be on the ballot paper.


  • Voting card trouble arises.

    While 1,500 ballot papers are delayed, other residents of Västerås get a double home in the mailbox.


  • When the early voting began on Saturday, March 6, there was great interest.


  • When the polls opened on Sunday 21 March 2021, Inger was the first to vote in City Hall.
