Bilivia Four months in preventive detention for former Bolivian President Jeanine Áñez and her former ministers
Bolivia Former President Áñez is arrested for terrorism and conspiracy
The indigenous revolution
has hardened the prison conditions of former
Bolivian
president
Jeanine Áñez
, despite appeals from inside and outside the country and despite her "health at risk" after suffering from hypertension.
The judge in charge of the
coup
case
yesterday decided to extend the provisional detention for the former president and for two of her ministers, Álvaro Coímbra and Rodrigo Guzmán, at the request of the Prosecutor's Office:
from the initial four months it now passes to six months.
And that's just for now
.
Already before the judicial decision, the government of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) had refused to transfer Áñez to a hospital, as claimed by defenders and family members,
despite the decision of one judge that was later reversed by another
.
What he did finally order was a change of prison, from the Obrajes prison to the Miraflores prison, where, according to the government, they have heart and oxygen monitors.
The General Directorate of Penitentiary Regime considers that the woman
who
ruled Bolivia on an interim basis for a year
is in stable condition.
"They took me out telling me I was going to the clinic," protested the former president.
Hours later, his daughter made an urgent appeal on his behalf to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Office of the UN High Commissioner
against "torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment
.
"
"We are not going to rest until we see her free and until she is assisted in a clinic by specialist doctors," insisted Carolina Ribera.
Áñez is the main protagonist of the government attack against leaders, soldiers and police officers
who participated in the events of November 2019, when the electoral fraud set up by the ruling party caused a chain reaction: popular protests, the rebellion of police officers that broke out in Cochabamba. They refused to repress the population,
the departure of several Evo Morales collaborators
, the pressure of the military against the former president and his final flight to Mexico.
For the MAS and its allies on the continent and in the world it was a coup, a story that they are now trying to impose from the courts.
The siege against the former president continued yesterday in the courts, during the appeal presented by the defense,
which resulted in a backfire when her provisional prison was extended to six months
.
The pro-government movement surprised even Áñez's defenders, as attorney Luis Guillén recognized: they ignored the charges presented and
only took into account the government's positions
.
The main reason that the government party argued, and that the judge has considered, is the possible influence of the detainees on the twenty witnesses who still have to take testimony.
In addition, both consider
that the former president may escape because "she is not willing to submit to the process
.
"
As conclusive evidence they use that Áñez tried to escape when police forces surrounded his home in Trinidad.
"Peaceful coexistence is at risk due to the servile condition and arbitrariness of the administrators of Justice, who must be free from all pressure," Archbishop Sergio Gualberti denounced.
"
The true Christian path is guided by the defense of truth and life
, together with the poorest. The hierarchy of the Episcopal Conference should denounce the massacres of the coup with the same force that it calls for impunity for the coup plotters," he accused by his side Evo Morales.
