Since November last year, almost 20 outbreaks of bird flu have been detected in the country.

In Småland, Kalmar counties have been affected, while Kronoberg and Jönköping counties have so far survived without any outbreaks.

The birds' spring migration means that the risk of infection spreading increases further north into the country now.

- If we look back over a period of 15 years, it is probably the most difficult season we have had, says Håkan Henrikson who is chief veterinarian at the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

Extensive outbreaks in Europe

Avian influenza is a disease that is mainly found among wild birds.

It varies from year to year which varieties of influenza circulate among wild birds and how extensive the infection is.

The current outbreak in Europe is very extensive with many cases of wild birds and many affected domestic poultry herds.

During the week, an outbreak of bird flu was discovered on a farm with 24,000 chickens in Mjölby municipality.

Different levels of protection

In large parts of the country, protection level 2 applies, which means that all poultry must be kept indoors so that they do not come into contact with wild birds.

It is also extra important that animal keepers keep an extra eye on animal health right now.

In the affected areas in Skåne, Kalmar, Halland and Östergötland counties, protection level 3 applies, which means further restrictions.
