Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - According to data from the State Health Office, the opening of schools and daycare centers in the southwest has led to a significant increase in the number of corona cases among children and adolescents.

"The proportion of infections among children and adolescents has recently increased significantly and is now around 20 percent of all infections," said the head of the health protection and epidemiology department at the state health office, Stefan Brockmann, the German press agency.

The increase in children and adolescents can be attributed to the opening of daycare centers and schools, according to Brockmann.

Since the opening of the facilities one sees more infections again.

From the doctor Brockmann's point of view, this development is not surprising.

"If we open daycare centers and schools, we also have to accept higher numbers of infections."

At the decision of the state government, numerous students returned to schools in the state on February 22nd, initially only in alternating classes.

Fifth and sixth graders have been back in face-to-face classes since last Monday, and elementary schools have started regular operations.

In daycare centers and kindergartens, this had already been the case at the end of February.

For Brockmann, the fact that the number of cases is currently increasing across the country is clearly due to the virus variants.

"If we take a closer look at the infections, we see that the transmissions with the previous variants of the virus are stagnating or declining," said Brockmann.

In contrast, infections with the new virus variants rose sharply.

There is currently no evidence that the infection situation is easing.
