Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Eisbären Berlin have continued their successful streak in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) against the first opponent from the southern group.

On Sunday, the capitals defeated the Augsburg Panthers 5: 3 (2: 1, 2: 2, 1: 0) and thus won their fifth game in a row.

Ryan McKiernan contributed two goals to the hard-won home win, and Giovanni Fiore, Parker Tuomie and Simon Després scored for the Northern Division leaders.

In front of empty stands in the arena at Ostbahnhof, the hosts consistently exploited their chances in the opening minutes: Fiore scored in the first power play, and Tuomie increased 32 seconds later.

The fast and robust Augsburgers were always dangerous, however, and Thomas Jordan Trevelyan scored before the first break.

After the restart, the game remained varied: McKiernan increased the Berlin team's lead, the guests were equalized by hits from Michael Clarke and Scott Valentine.

But Després immediately put the hosts back on their feet.

In the final third, the Berliners also used their third power play: McKiernan was successful again.

Then the polar bears brought the success with great commitment over time.
