The Associated Press reported that Moon Chul-myeong (56), a North Korean man who was handed over to the United States on charges of money laundering, was detained by the US authorities on the 20th.

The Associated Press said Moon was the first North Korean to be taken to the United States for trial after being detained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Saturday.

Earlier, Malaysian authorities handed over a recruit to the United States on charges of involvement in money laundering, and North Korea protested this and declared a severance of diplomatic relations with Malaysia. .

The FBI requested that Moon violate sanctions on North Korea, sending luxury goods such as alcohol and watches to North Korea, and laundering money through a ghost company, and requested the delivery of recruits to Malaysia in May 2019.

In this regard, a Washington DC federal court judge issued an arrest warrant for Moon on May 2 of that year for money laundering and other charges.

Malaysian authorities arrested Moon the same month.

A Malaysian court approved Moon's extradition in December 2019, and the Malaysian Supreme Court dismissed Moon's appeal earlier this month for refusing to extradite recruits.

Before moving to Malaysia in 2008, Moon is accused of violating UN sanctions, including engaging in supplying banned luxury goods from Singapore to North Korea.

There are also charges of laundering money through a ghost company and creating fraudulent documents to support illegal shipments, the AP reported.

But Moon denies all of these charges and says he is concerned that he will not get a fair trial in the United States.

In addition, the AP reported that India is "in accordance with political motives," and is claiming to be aimed at increasing pressure on North Korea over the missile program.

The North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs first revealed the fact of the US delivery of Mr. Moon in a statement through the Chosun Central News Agency on the 19th, and claimed the charges against him as "absurd fabrication and complete insult."
