Klingenthal (dpa) - Fabian Rießle gave the German Nordic Combined a podium finish at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old only had to admit defeat to the Norwegian and overall World Cup winner Jarl Magnus Riiber and his compatriot Espen Björnstad in third on Sunday in Klingenthal.

In the finish sprint of the ten kilometer long cross-country skiing race, Rießle prevailed against the Austrian double world champion Johannes Lamparter with an energetic performance.

Vinzenz Geiger from Oberstdorf defended his second place in the overall standings against Akito Watabe from Japan.

Sixth place on Sunday was enough for Geiger.

Riiber had already clearly prevailed in the overall standings in the past two years.

Also this season he was the outstanding combiner.
