Östersund (dpa) - Biathlete Franziska Preuß secured third place in the overall World Cup in the last race of the season.

With third place in the final mass start, the 27-year-old moved up from fifth place to the overall podium for the first time in her career in Östersund, Sweden.

The Bavarian managed six penalties in difficult conditions with sometimes very strong winds and at the finish was 11.1 seconds behind the winner Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold (5 penalties) from Norway.

Second was Dsinara Alimbekawa (6) from Belarus.

Preuss had done four penalty loops in the third shooting, but came a long way through a show of strength in the end.

The ex-world champion almost won the World Cup discipline in the mass start.

In the end, Preuss was only three points short of this triumph behind Tandrevold.

The second best German in the race on Sunday was Janina Hettich (4) in ninth place, Denise Herrmann (6) in eleventh place.

Due to a storm, the start had to be postponed by two and a half hours.

The German women, who were once so spoiled for success, ended the season with an overall poor record.

For the first time since 1989/1990 there was no victory in an individual race and only a World Championship medal in Pokljuka thanks to silver with the relay.

The Norwegian Tiril Eckhoff had long before the final as the sovereign overall World Cup winner.
