The fears of Hamburg's First Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) have come true.

From his point of view, the opening steps recently taken were a mistake, as the figures now clearly demonstrate.

Because according to the health authority, 336 new corona infections were registered in the metropolis with 1.8 million inhabitants on Saturday.

That is 126 cases more than a week ago.

The incidence, i.e. the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, rises rapidly to 115.3 - and is now over 100 for the fourth day in a row.

On Friday the incidence was 108.6, the two days before it was 105.4 and 100.9, and a week ago it was 85.5.

Even with the generally somewhat lower numbers from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Hamburg has now reached the important threshold of 100.

Because the incidence, according to data from the Hanseatic city, exceeded the 100 threshold on three consecutive days, the stricter corona rules have been in effect in Hamburg since Saturday.

These stricter corona rules apply in Hamburg

The red-green Senate pulled the emergency brake and took back the opening steps that had only been carried out at the beginning of last week.

This means that shops are only allowed to make their goods available for collection, appointment shopping is no longer allowed.

In addition, museums, galleries, zoos and botanical gardens have to close again.

Stricter rules also apply to private contacts.

A household can only meet with one other person.

The restrictions do not apply to children under 14 years of age.

They are also allowed to do sports outdoors in groups of up to ten boys and girls.

For Mayor Tschentscher it is now clear that the whole of Germany has arrived in a "strong third wave" of the pandemic.

Accordingly, at the meeting of the federal and state governments on Monday, he will campaign for the latest easing to be withdrawn everywhere.

Hamburg's schools and daycare centers are not affected by the restrictions for the time being, but from Monday every student should be tested once and every school employee three times a week.

"We have delivered a total of 480,000 self-rapid tests to the Hamburg schools - enough to enable extensive testing in the next few weeks," emphasized school senator Ties Rabe (SPD).

Pilot tests with more than 20,000 self-tests among school employees have shown that the test is also easy to use by laypeople.

With the exception of the AfD, all parliamentary groups in the Hamburg parliament support the decision of the red-green Senate.

"With the current data situation in Hamburg, pulling the emergency brake is unfortunately the only correct decision," said CDU parliamentary group leader Dennis Thering.

The aggressive forms of the virus have already spread too much again.

Nevertheless, Thering called for daily rapid tests in schools and daycare centers.

The left-wing health expert Deniz Celik accused the Senate of not having adequately flanked the recently decided relaxation with a functioning test and vaccination strategy.

Another major corona outbreak at Airbus

Meanwhile, there is another major corona outbreak at the aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

According to information from NDR 90.3, a production hall in which 400 people work is affected.

It is still unclear how many employees at the Finkenwerder plant were infected with the corona virus.

Only in January did a corona outbreak at Airbus hamper parts of the final assembly.

After pressure from the authorities, the aircraft manufacturer then had to improve its hygiene concept.

According to the health authority, 57,002 hamburgers have been proven to have been infected with Sars-CoV-2 since the outbreak of the pandemic.

50,800 of them are now considered to have recovered.

The number of those vaccinated at least once rose from Thursday to Friday by 3,073 to 167,855, the number of those who had already been vaccinated twice by 1,182 to 76,805 women and men.

As of Friday, 241 corona patients were being cared for in Hamburg's hospitals, two fewer than on Thursday.

The number of intensive care patients rose by one to 90. According to the RKI, the number of corona deaths in Hamburg increased by one to 1,343.
