Sanremo (dpa) - Professional cyclist Jasper Stuyven has won the 112th edition of the Italian spring classic Milan-Sanremo.

The 28-year-old Belgian prevailed on Sunday at the cycling monument after 299 kilometers from the metropolis to the coastal town and left the Australian Caleb Ewan and the Belgian defending champion Wout van Aert behind.

The best German was Paris-Nice winner Maximilian Schachmann, who countered the attacks of the top favorites on the final climb and had to admit defeat in the final sprint in 14th place.

His team-mate Peter Sagan finished fourth.

The last German winner in Sanremo was John Degenkolb in 2015.
