Göttingen (AP) - The Green politician and former Federal Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin (66) is running again for the Bundestag.

The Göttingen Greens announced on Saturday evening that he was elected as a direct candidate with 86 out of 102 votes cast.

There were 8 votes against and 8 abstentions - and no other candidates.

Trittin has been a member of the Bundestag since 1998.

From 1998 to 2005 he was Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, from 2009 to 2013 parliamentary group leader of the Greens.

Trittin has been a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee since 2014.

The experience with the corona crisis, the worsening climate crisis and the crisis of the international order would have tipped the scales to run again, he announced a few months ago.

On Saturday, Trittin said, according to the announcement: "These elections are about overcoming the corona pandemic and putting Germany on the 1.5-degree path."

In the Paris Climate Agreement, the international community agreed to limit global warming to well below two degrees, if possible to 1.5 degrees.
