Magdeburg / Berlin (dpa / sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, the number of days lost by employees due to mental illnesses in the Corona year 2020 reached a record high.

The DAK-Gesundheit determined 285 days of absence per 100 employed insured persons, as the health insurance company announced.

In the previous year there were around 257.

"While absenteeism due to mental illness has stagnated at a high level since 2016, it rose again massively in the Corona year," explained Steffen Meyrich, head of the state representative of DAK health in Saxony-Anhalt.

Women are particularly hard hit.

They reportedly had more than twice as many days off due to mental illness as men.

Under the pandemic conditions, their absenteeism increased by 15 percent, for men by 3 percent.

The health insurance company found that there were fewer cases in 2020 but a longer average duration of illness.

For the past year, 8.8 cases of mental illness per 100 employed insured persons were registered after 9.1 cases in 2019. However, the duration of the case increased by 4.4 days to 32.6 days.

According to the statistics, there were similarly high values in 2014 (32.7) and 2016 (34.1).

According to DAK-Gesundheit, the current analysis shows that people with mental health problems suffered particularly from the pandemic restrictions and stress.

Slightly fewer days of absence were caused by depression compared to the previous year, and around seven percent more by adjustment disorders.

This is a reaction to a stressful life event.

They could manifest themselves in negative changes in the state of mind or in disorders of social behavior.

According to the information, the Berlin IGES Institute has evaluated data from more than 53,000 employees insured at the health insurance fund in Saxony-Anhalt for the DAK Psychreport.

All absences were received for which a certificate of incapacity for work with a psychological diagnosis had been sent to the cash register.
