Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The wine culture in Germany and the hut culture in the Palatinate Forest are new intangible cultural heritage.

The culture ministers of the federal states approved the corresponding applications from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate on Friday.

In total, they added 18 cultural forms and two programs to the nationwide directory of intangible cultural heritage, as announced by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture in Mainz.

"Wine shapes our entire federal state," said Minister for Viticulture, Volker Wissing (FDP).

Six of 13 German growing areas are here.

Wissing added: "Without viticulture and the traditions associated with it, Rhineland-Palatinate would be a different country."

Viticulture has been practiced in this area for more than 2000 years.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the “hut culture in the Palatinate Forest” is almost exclusively carried out on a voluntary basis: “The Palatinate Forest Association with around 50,000 members, 3000 of whom are actively volunteers, maintains and operates over 80 hiking homes, rest stops and shelters in around 100 local groups.

They operate the huts and maintain the 10,000-kilometer network of trails in the Palatinate Forest. "

The ministry also announced that the "Meadow irrigation in the Queichwiesen between Landau and Germersheim", which had already been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage in 2019, should become part of a joint application by several states for the representative list of Unesco.

It is about traditional irrigation.
