Berlin (dpa) - Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) has agreed that the third corona wave in Germany cannot be stopped by vaccinations.

"We are in the third wave of the pandemic, the numbers are increasing, the proportion of mutations is high," said Spahn on Friday in Berlin.

“Part of an honest analysis of the situation is that there is not yet enough vaccine in Europe to stop the third wave by vaccination alone,” said Spahn.

"Even if the deliveries from EU orders come reliably, it will still take a few weeks until the risk groups are fully vaccinated," said the CDU politician.

“Only then can we also talk about broader openings in society.

So we will still need a lot of patience. "

The increasing number of infections could mean that there might not be any further opening steps - but “even steps backwards” would be necessary.

This Monday, the Prime Ministers of the federal states and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) want to discuss the next steps in relation to the restrictions.

The SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach has spoken out in favor of tightening the corona measures again quickly.

"You can turn it around as you want, we have to go back to lockdown," he said on Friday in Berlin.

There is no point in waiting.

The earlier you react, the shorter the lockdown has to be in order to return to a manageable number of cases.

Lauterbach spoke of the beginning of a “brilliant third wave”.

According to him, a nationwide incidence of 200 is to be expected due to the displacement of the old virus variant by new variants in mid-April.

If the number of cases is not slowed down, an overload of the intensive care units can be expected in a few weeks.

Lauterbach also welcomed the continuation of the vaccination with Astrazeneca planned for this Friday.

It is a very effective vaccine that can very safely prevent hospitalization and death in the elderly.

"Therefore, the vaccine is safe and the benefits are guaranteed, and I expressly welcome the fact that vaccination has started again in Germany."

He would take this vaccine anytime, Lauterbach said.
