Hamburg / Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - The credit agency Crifbürgel expects more bankruptcies in Saarland this year due to the corona pandemic.

The number of company bankruptcies could more than double in the state compared to 2020.

A total of almost 500 company insolvencies are possible in Saarland, reported Crifbürgel managing director Frank Schlein on Friday in Hamburg.

"Due to the Corona crisis, many companies in Germany currently have economic problems," said Schlein.

Nationwide, more than 300,000 companies are currently in financial difficulties.

However, this has not yet been reflected in the insolvency figures.

According to Crifbürgel, only 210 companies filed for bankruptcy in Saarland in 2020, 28.6 percent less than in the previous year.

The main reason for this development is the suspension of the obligation to file for bankruptcy in combination with the numerous aid packages for companies.

The effects of the pandemic on the economy are therefore only gradually becoming apparent, Schlein said.

In addition to the “normal” bankruptcy events, there was a risk of 206 additional bankruptcies in Saarland in the current year.

"Small businesses with fewer than ten employees are particularly affected," said Schlein.
