Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - The sudden death of four silky monkeys in the Duisburg Zoo is due to organ failure.

The pathological examination of the animals revealed changes in the liver, kidneys and spleen, the zoo reported on its Facebook page.

"The fact that four animals die within a few days is a particularly unfortunate event."

An infection with the corona virus has been ruled out.

The lungs showed no corresponding changes.

Several media had previously reported.

The initiative for great apes "Great ape project", which had called for an external investigation into the initially puzzling deaths, was not satisfied with the information on Thursday: It was not at all clear what led to the organ failure.

With the death of the two young animals and two adult monkeys, the zoo lost its entire group of black-tailed silky monkeys, which are rarely kept in Europe.

"The little silky monkeys with their wit and charm will keep a firm place in our hearts," said the zoo's declaration.

The zoo was reopened last Wednesday after the lockdown.

In January 2020 he had registered offspring in his silky monkeys.

Black-tailed silky monkeys live in the rainforests of South America.

Like many animals in the rainforest, they suffer from the constriction of their habitat due to massive deforestation of trees and fires.
