Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) fears that trips to Mallorca can drive up corona infections in Germany.

The Balearic Island and other regions in Spain are no longer a corona risk area.

"I am firmly convinced that this will inevitably lead to Mallorca becoming a breeding ground for viruses," said Woidke on Thursday in Potsdam.

The number of new infections will skyrocket in just a few weeks.

In order to prevent this, Brandenburg is planning mandatory corona tests at Berlin Airport BER before departure and after returning.

Since Sunday, Germans have been able to take a vacation on their favorite island again without quarantine and mandatory testing when they return.

The federal government decided on Friday to remove Mallorca and several other regions of Spain from the list of corona risk areas due to low infection numbers.

Since then, the number of bookings on Mallorca has been increasing.

However, the federal government called for a general refusal to travel to tourism.

A compulsory PCR test is only required for travelers aged six and over if they enter Spain by air or sea and come from a risk country or area.

The Canary Islands, for example, are still a risk area.
