China News Service, Beijing, March 18th. Tsinghua University’s official website announced on the 18th that the school’s newly revised "Regulations for the Training of Graduate Students for Master's Degree" (hereinafter referred to as the "Regulations") will not regard the publication of academic thesis as an application for a thesis defense or application for a degree. This move aims to eliminate the tendency of "thesis-only" in the evaluation of master's degree.

The revision work was launched in January 2017 and lasted for four years.

According to the "Regulations", the school abolished the requirement that "non-professional degree master students should complete at least one dissertation related to the content of the dissertation and meet the publication requirements."

Regarding degree application, the "Regulations" stated that "thesis is the main basis for degree evaluation" and requires master students to "independently complete the research work of the dissertation under the guidance of the instructor, and the corresponding innovative results should be fully presented in the form of a dissertation." "; "Master students can apply for a thesis defense only after completing their personal training plan, meeting the relevant requirements of the discipline or professional degree category training program, completing the work of the dissertation, and meeting the relevant requirements."

Regarding the topic selection and report link of the thesis, the "Regulations" require that “if the topic selection requires major adjustments in the process of dissertation research work, the link of literature review and topic selection report shall be completed again.” The department should organize an assessment team according to the discipline or professional degree category to inspect its comprehensive ability, the progress of the thesis work, work attitude, and energy input." Only those who pass can continue to carry out the research work of the dissertation.

In addition, the supplementary provisions of the "Regulations" clearly require that "the training of international students for master's degree is carried out in accordance with these regulations."

The new version of the "Regulations" will be used to guide the formulation and revision of the master's training program in various disciplines and professional degree categories of Tsinghua University.
