Schwetzingen (dpa / lsw) - With several loud explosions, two ATMs in a Schwetzingen shopping center were blown up early Thursday morning.

The two pavilions in which the machines were located were completely destroyed, the police said.

Rocks flew through the air and then lay on the adjacent streets, as it was said.

Several parked cars were damaged.

According to the police, there was damage of at least 200,000 euros.

"Whether money was stolen from the machine has not yet been determined," said a spokesman.

The investigators assume that there were several perpetrators who fled towards the A6 in fast cars after the detonations and could not initially be caught.

According to the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), robbers go away empty-handed when blowing up ATMs in most cases.

The machines are often destroyed by introducing gas and igniting them.

That is why some of the explosions cause greater damage than the theft of the money.

The financial institutions are insured against property damage.

However, if an institute is more frequently targeted by criminals, the insurance will usually become more expensive.

Banks and savings banks have been trying for a long time to make life difficult for tank crackers with a wide variety of security measures.

For example, the machines can be equipped with gas neutralization technology.

Another method: if the building is blown up, the money is colored.
