Munich (dpa / lby) - According to the supervisory authorities, security gaps in the Microsoft Exchange communication system have been exploited hundreds of times in Bavaria.

"In the period from March 9 to 17, 2021 alone, the two Bavarian data protection supervisory authorities registered over 750 reports of data protection violations in this context," said the Bavarian State Commissioner for Data Protection, Thomas Petri, and the State Office for Data Protection Supervision in Munich on Thursday .

In the past few weeks, Microsoft has discovered several malicious programs that exploited recently disclosed security holes in its Exchange e-mail system.

The group published security updates that should close the gaps.

However, the updates must be installed by the customer themselves.

There are "still acute data protection risks," warned Petri.

Cybercriminals attackers could access vulnerable mail servers of companies and authorities in a targeted manner.

With vulnerable systems, there has since been an increased risk of unauthorized access to stored data such as e-mails, address books or calendars.

Even if many public authorities in Bavaria had closed the gaps in the meantime, “the wave of attacks is not yet over”.

As before, groups of attackers tried to install malware such as encryption Trojans and to access data for blackmail or other misuse purposes.
