Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Hamburg's Senator for Health Melanie Leonhard (SPD) has warned against hasty steps following the decision of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on the Astrazeneca vaccine.

It makes "no sense to rush the vaccine to the vaccination centers and practices," she said on Thursday evening.

“We asked the Standing Vaccination Commission for a scientifically sound recommendation on how and for whom the vaccine should be used.

We will wait for this and then take it into account. "

The EMA had previously classified Astrazeneca's drug as safe.

However, an extra warning will be added against possible rare cases of blood clots (thrombosis) in cerebral veins, according to a special meeting of the safety committee in Amsterdam.

Germany and other EU countries had stopped using the vaccine for the time being after reports of side effects.

In order to be able to continue vaccinating, Hamburg had changed its vaccination program and also vaccinated under 80-year-olds with the vaccines from Biontech and Moderna in order to compensate for the failure of the Astrazeneca agent at least for a short time.

In the health authority, changes in the use of the Astrazeneca vaccine are not expected until next week at the earliest.

It is now more important to have “reliability and clarity than a few hours ahead of time”, said Leonhard.

"After all, we want to maintain and secure health with the vaccinations."

She wanted to advance vaccination in Hamburg, said Leonhard.

"And quickly, but not hectically."

Appointments at the vaccination center are currently suspended.

Additional groups would be called based on the availability of vaccines, she said.

The doctor's practices would also be included in the vaccination campaign across the board, “as soon as enough vaccine is available”.
