Kiyoko Ono, a former member of the House of Councilors of the Liberal Democratic Party, who was the bronze medalist of the last Tokyo Olympics and chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, died on the 13th of this month.

Mr. Ono says that his condition suddenly changed after he was infected with the new coronavirus and recovered.

Originally from Miyagi prefecture, Mr. Ono participated in the 1960 Rome Olympics as a representative of Japan for women's gymnastics, and four years later at the Tokyo Olympics, he won a bronze medal in a women's gymnastics group.



After being elected for the first time in the Upper House election in 1986, he served as a member of the House of Councilors for a total of three terms and 18 years, and served as the chairman of the National Public Safety Commission and the minister in charge of youth development and declining birthrate in the Koizumi Cabinet.



In addition, Mr. Ono was the first woman to serve as a member of the JOC = Japanese Olympic Committee, and worked on the promotion of sports and the promotion of education policy.



According to the Liberal Democratic Party, Mr. Ono was hospitalized for a fall fracture at home in January and was infected with the new coronavirus. After recovering, his condition suddenly changed and he died on the 13th of this month.
