Berlin (dpa) - The former chief accountant of Wirecard has apologized for the fraud scandal with alleged billions in damage to the former Dax group.

He is sorry that the case with the mechanisms within the company was not uncovered, said the 46-year-old on Thursday in the Bundestag investigative committee.

"It was inconceivable for me that something like this could happen."

He actually thought that Wirecard was well positioned in terms of compliance, internal auditing and the supervisory board, said the chief accountant.

He himself had no knowledge of fraudulent activities at Wirecard, he emphasized.

The chief accountant reported that the figures in the third-party business abroad, where the fraud allegedly occurred, did not strike him as strange.

Although there were always organizational difficulties in gathering all the information necessary for audits, third-party partners and trustees confirmed the balances independently of one another.

There should be around 1.9 billion euros in the trust accounts, allegedly Wirecard profits from transactions in Asia.

According to investigations by the public prosecutor's office, however, this money was probably never available.

After uncovering this gap in the balance sheet, Wirecard filed for bankruptcy last summer.

The public prosecutor is currently investigating the case against the chief accountant.

She accuses several ex-managers of the financial company, among other things, of commercial gang fraud, balance sheet falsification and market manipulation.
