Hamburg (dpa / lno) - A trial against two men who are said to have caused a serious explosion in the Barmbek-Nord district while producing drugs began on Thursday in front of the Hamburg regional court.

A defendant (39) partially admitted the allegations, according to a court spokesman, his 32-year-old acquaintance denied them.

The public prosecutor's office accuses them of growing cannabis plants in the older man's home in order to trade.

While producing hashish oil, the men negligently triggered the explosion in November.

The court spokesman reported that the defense lawyers had made statements for the two defendants.

The 39-year-old admitted that he owned 18 cannabis plants - but mostly for personal consumption.

He has attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The drugs would have helped him calm down.

According to the court spokesman, 2500 euros were found in a bucket in the basement of the unemployed.

The defendant announced that he had saved the money by collecting deposits.

According to the court spokesman, the 39-year-old gave little information about the explosion.

The other defendant was the neighbor.

The 32-year-old said, according to the court spokesman, they met every now and then for a beer or to smoke pot.

The man had emphasized that he had nothing to do with the cultivation.

He only noticed that his neighbor was fiddling in the kitchen area - then the explosion occurred.

Both suffered burn injuries.

The prosecution put the damage to the apartment building at more than 100,000 euros.

According to the police, debris also damaged six parked cars.

Six more days of negotiations are planned.
