The Episcopal Conference of Congo-Brazzaville received a letter indicating that it did not have the receipt from the Ministry of the Interior to observe the conduct of the presidential election next Sunday, March 21, in which the outgoing president Denis Sassou-Nguesso is a candidate, after 36 years in power.

The bishops are surprised by this refusal, as explained by Father Félicien Mavoungou, national coordinator of the Episcopal Commission “Justice and Peace” in Congo-Brazzaville.

We do not understand this refusal.

A church which is present in the country and which is an important part of civil society.

We do not understand.

They ask that there be a specific receipt for election observation.

We have never spoken, we do not know of a single case of an NGO holding a receipt for election observation.

All of this surprises us and we are asking a lot of questions.

We want to know a little more.
