Mühlhausen / Erfurt (dpa / th) - Another case of avian influenza has been detected in Thuringia.

Laboratory tests confirmed the highly contagious bird flu virus of the subtype H5N8 in two gray geese found dead at the swan pond in Mühlhausen (Unstrut-Hainich district), as the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

In the search for more dead wild birds in the area, no further finds have been made so far.

In the meantime, clinical investigations of the populations of small poultry farmers in the vicinity of the site had begun.

Compulsory stalls were ordered for large free-range holdings.

The same applies to domestic poultry in the areas in the Unstrut-Hainich district, where wild birds are currently increasing.

According to the information, the transmission of influenza viruses in poultry occurs primarily through direct contact with infected animals or through contact with faeces.

Virus-contaminated material such as bedding, equipment, shoes or protective clothing can also promote transmission.

A transmission with the currently circulating subtypes H5N8, H5N5, H5N3, H5N1 and H5N4 to humans or mammals has not yet taken place in Germany and Europe according to current scientific knowledge.

The consumption of poultry products is also safe.
