At the riding club in Ljungby, they have chosen to take the safe before the unsafe and said stop to all horses that do not belong to the club, both in the stable and at the facility itself.

Private individuals who normally take their horses to the club for training must now stay at home.

- It is better we put a complete stop for horses from outside, to avoid misunderstandings, says Thomas Lennartsson, chairman of Ljungby Ridklubb.

All competitions paused

The Swedish Equestrian Federation has paused all competition activities in the country due to EH-V-1.

Most riding clubs in Kronoberg have closed the stables for horses that do not belong to the club, but the facilities are still open to private individuals and their horses.

Viruses in horses are not uncommon, but this variant can be fatal.

The EH-V1 virus can cause paralysis that later kills horses, and pregnant mares can be forced into abortions.

Same rules of conduct as for covid-19

There is currently no known spread of the horse virus in Småland and riding schools can continue as usual.

For riders and horses, however, it is important to keep a distance, both in terms of covid-19 and the horse virus.

- You have to be careful not to pet other people's horses, and to change clothes if you have been in another stable, says stable manager Jenny Karlsson.
