  • One year ago to the day, France was confined for the first time in order to stem the progression of the coronavirus epidemic.

  • In Hauts-de-France, the situation is very tense, to the point that containment of the region at the weekend could be announced on Thursday.

  • The figures for Public Health France are also much worse today than a year ago.

A year ago, to the day, France confined itself for the first time in order to fight against an epidemic of coronavirus which had become uncontrollable.

At the time, no one would have imagined that the health crisis would still be relevant a year later.

It is however the case.

In Hauts-de-France, the situation is even worse today than last March.

So much so that the government could announce, Thursday, a local containment measure for the entire region from next weekend.

It is certain that in one year, certain things have evolved in the right direction.

Already in Lille we now find effortlessly surgical masks and hydroalcoholic gel.

And if restaurants are still prohibited from receiving the public, the delivery and "click & collect" offer is much more important today.

And then there are the vaccines.

Despite everything, the figures for the epidemic in Hauts-de-France provided by Public Health France are sobering.

Rising curves on several criteria

In mid-March 2020, 313 people diagnosed positive for Covid-19 were hospitalized in Hauts-de-France and establishments in the region admitted an average of 212 new patients each day.

On October 29, 2020, the day the second confinement began, 2,204 beds were occupied by Covid-19 patients (excluding intensive care).

That figure is 3,061 today.

The same ascending curve is observed for the intensive care units with 87 people treated in mid-March 2020, 333 on October 29 and 526 to date.

The number of daily intensive care admissions has increased from 37 on the day of the 1st confinement to 68 in recent days.

Our file on the coronavirus

The trend is further confirmed by looking at the number of daily deaths of people diagnosed with Covid-19 positive.

On March 17, 2020, Hauts-de-France hospitals declared 25 dead against 29 on the day of the second confinement and 36 today.

According to the latest count from Public Health France, 6,763 people with a Covid-19 diagnosis have died in the region since March 1, 2020, or just over 10% of the total nationally.
