Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - In the corona pandemic, more than 3000 non-profit associations in Saarland received financial support from the state government.

The government announced in Saarbrücken on Wednesday that they had obtained around 6.5 million euros through the Vereinhilfe Saarland funding program.

The rescue package was decided in the summer of 2020 in order to be able to close financial gaps in clubs that were not covered by the federal and state corona aid.

"With the quick and unbureaucratic support we were able to do our part to preserve the existence of many clubs," said Prime Minister Tobias Hans (CDU).

The clubs are indispensable for the Saarland: "Almost every second person in Saarland is involved in clubs and associations."

Society lives from "that people volunteer and volunteer for others, in the social and cultural area, for the environment and in many other areas," said Hans.

The Saarland is considered the federal state with the highest number of clubs.

There are around 10,000 clubs with just under a million inhabitants.
