For days, journalists have been trying to tease Winfried Kretschmann with whom he wants to govern in the future after his big election victory.

The Green Prime Minister has the choice between a new edition of the coalition with the weakened CDU or a traffic light with the SPD and FDP.

On Tuesday evening, presenter Markus Lanz tried to lure more out of the 72-year-old in the ZDF program of the same name.

At first, Kretschmann only said: "We are not committed." It depends on what the exploratory talks from this Wednesday on.

But then it got interesting.

Why didn't he just continue the coalition with the CDU - "or was it that bad?" Asked Lanz.

“Of course it wasn't bad.

It wasn't always easy, ”replied Kretschmann.

Then he added: “'Not bad' is not yet the benchmark for political action.” Would he prefer a traffic light alliance?

Kretschmann replied: “It would certainly be interesting from an experiential point of view.

But that is also not the yardstick for such a decision. "

But couldn't it be an advantage to work with two small partners instead of just one big partner who is almost as strong as the Greens?

Kretschmann: “It could be like that, but it doesn't have to be like that.

The little ones can also unite against the big one. ”One could read about that in the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.

"I'm trying to make the greens bigger"

Lanz quoted a CDU strategist from Baden-Württemberg who had said before the state elections: "If Kretschmann can bury the CDU, he will do that."

The CDU is a very important people's party that founded the social market economy and ties to the West.

Who is now having a Chancellor who has led our country well for many years. ”He added,“ Why should I wish that this party was brought down?

That's not my intention now. ”He doesn't make her small.

"I'm trying to make the greens bigger."

Kretschmann also commented on the planned further easing from Monday - and questioned them.

"Of course, now with the situation, I'll think twice about opening more openings on Monday," he said at "Lanz".

He is considering suspending further opening and discussing “what we can risk” with the other Prime Minister and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) on Monday.

When asked whether he was feeling uncomfortable, the Green politician said: "Yes, exactly."

The so-called seven-day incidence has risen nationwide to 79.8 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the southwest.

For comparison: a week ago the value was 60.7, a month ago - in the middle of lockdown - it was 43.7.

Baden-Württemberg has lost its top position for a long time with the fewest corona cases within seven days.

The country is currently in fifth place.

For a good week there has been the first easing in circles that are stable below an incidence of 50.

The shops were allowed to reopen with restrictions, and daycare centers and elementary schools have all been open since then.

In the south-west, the 5th and 6th grades have had face-to-face classes again since this Monday.

Kretschmann: "Enormous pressure from the population"

The next opening step is actually planned for next Monday.

However, this should be made dependent on the fact that the previous stage did not lead to a worsening of the seven-day incidence for 14 days.

Then it is first about the opening of outdoor catering, cinemas, theaters, concert and opera houses as well as contact-free sport indoors and contact sports outdoors.

Kretschmann said: "We see the enormous pressure from the population to open up, it is really enormous." Politicians can not only make do's and don'ts, they must also see that the vast majority of people adhere to them.

"Of course we always talk with angels tongues, please remember, we don't want a third wave." But: "That often fades away." You could possibly open it up further if there are quick and self-tests on a broad scale - "but it works not overnight either ”.
