Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Environment Minister Priska Hinz (Greens) has defended the state government's action plan to strengthen the rural regions in Hesse against the criticism of the state parliament opposition.

The funding programs are intended to create opportunities for young people and young families to like to stay in rural areas and for older people to have a good evening there, said the minister on Wednesday in the Wiesbaden state parliament.

"We want a modern rural area and not a Bullerby."

It is about bringing together lively town centers with modern apartments.

The rural areas in Hesse comprise around 80 percent of the state's area with around 2000 villages and 370 smaller towns and communities.

More than half of the Hessian population lives in rural areas.

The state's funding programs are bundled in the “Strong Land - Good Life” action plan.

A total of around 1.2 billion euros should be available for this this year.

The plan comprises nine areas.

In addition to village development, the expansion of bus, train and bicycle traffic as well as the expansion of digital supply, it is also about medical care and job security in the rural regions of Hesse.

In the debate, the state parliament opposition accused the state government of only acting with catchphrases and announcements.

The municipalities are chronically underfunded and there are serious structural problems.

The infrastructure, digital networking, medical care and childcare in particular need to be improved for equal living conditions.
