Magdeburg (AP) - Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) has sharply condemned the racist threatening letter against handball national coach Alfred Gislason.

"The threatening letter is unacceptable and fills me with great disgust," said Haseloff on Wednesday.

"We are proud that Alfred Gislason has lived in Saxony-Anhalt for many years and would like it to stay that way," emphasized Haseloff.

Gislason published a racist threatening letter on Tuesday that a stranger had sent him.

The author had asked and threatened the national coach to resign because of his nationality.

The Icelander has lived not far from the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt since his time as coach of the Bundesliga club SC Magdeburg.

"As a long-time coach of SC Magdeburg and THW Kiel, he has made great contributions to handball in Germany," said Haseloff.

"Under his leadership, the German national team qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo."

The letter had already caused horror on Tuesday.

Among other things, the German Handball Federation (DHB) and Saxony-Anhalt's Interior and Sports Minister Michael Richter (CDU) then showed solidarity with the coach and clearly criticized the hostility.

On Wednesday, the national soccer coach Joachim Löw encouraged his handball colleague.
