A real drama played out on Tuesday in California, in the suburbs of Los Angeles.

Two people died in the explosion of a large amount of fireworks that destroyed a house and caused a fire, rescue workers said.

A powerful explosion rocked the city of Ontario in the early afternoon, about 60 km east of Los Angeles.

"A large amount of fireworks ignited, causing a major fire," the municipality said shortly after on Twitter, urging the population to avoid the area.

The city's fire chief, Ray Gayk, explained at a press briefing that they were professional pyrotechnics, "the kind you usually see in fireworks shows. ".

Deminers always on site

Aerial images broadcast by local television showed a large house in flames, the roof apparently blown off by the explosion, the cause of which has not yet been determined.

Deminers and the police are still on site and the municipality called on residents to be extremely careful because there could be fireworks that have not yet exploded.
