March 17, 2021 Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, was acquitted by the Court of Milan in the trial for international corruption with the acquisition of the exploration rights of the Opl245 oil block in Nigeria at the center.

The judges also acquitted his predecessor and current AC Milan president, Paolo Scaroni. 



Eni and Shell, the two oil companies accused as entities in the trial for international corruption with the acquisition of the exploration rights of the Opl245 oil block in Nigeria at the center, were also acquitted.

This was decided by the seventh section of the Court of Milan chaired by judge Marco Tremolada. 



Accused persons acquitted because the fact does not exist


The defendants have all been acquitted because the fact does not exist.

This is the verdict for the Eni and Shell companies and 13 other people accused of international corruption.

Among the defendants, in addition to Descalzi and Scaroni, the former Minister of Oil of Nigeria, Dan Etete, four former managers of Shell, former managers of Eni and some intermediaries.

Among these Roberto Casula, former head of Eni's exploration division, Vincenzo Armanna, former vice president of Eni Nigeria, Ciro Antonio Pagano, at the time managing director of Nae, Emeka Obi, a lawyer who would have acted as intermediary in the operation, and Luigi Bisignani, also considered a mediator.

This was stated by Descalzi's lawyer, Paola Severino, commenting on the acquittal of all the defendants in the trial on the alleged $ 1.092 billion bribe that would have been paid by Eni and Shell to win the concession by the government of Nigeria's exploration rights on the Opl245 block.
