Tunisian Shaima Dallali - the first Arab Muslim to win the presidency of the University of London Students' Union - said that there is real and legitimate concern about the British government's attempts to suppress student activities in support of the Palestinian cause.

This came in its response to reports saying that the British government is exerting continuous pressure on student unions within universities with the aim of adopting a new concept of anti-Semitism, even if that would affect students' activities to advocate for the Palestinian cause.

Shaima added during an interview with Al-Jazeera Mubasher, that students are already more active and interactive when it comes to education and academic issues, as they defend the freedom of expression on these issues with the continued government pressure.

But she emphasized that despite all this, there is a vision about students ’awareness and that they are able to stand up to these government attempts to suppress their voices.

Despite Corona's measures, Shaima succeeded in managing her election campaign (communication sites)

Shaimaa had established a special association to support the Palestinian cause and launched more than one campaign in the past within the university in this regard, in addition to other campaigns such as supporting sanitation workers.

Shaima also discussed issues of interest to students, so she was preoccupied with the rights of students, defending their demands and listening to their suffering, which earned her the confidence of teachers and students, and developed an electoral program in which she focused on their just causes, especially with the outbreak of the Corona pandemic.

She voted for Shaima, both Muslims and non-Muslims, in elections in which 19,000 eligible voters participated and she won the presidency of the federation early this month, becoming the first veiled Muslim girl to win this position in the history of the federation.

Regarding her plan to deal with the rising waves of Islamophobia in the West, including the extreme right in Britain, she said, “From my position in this university, I will focus on being effective and we must be more involved in implementing measures that enable us to work with the student community and the local community to reject and reject racism in all its forms. “.

In addition to Shaima, two veiled Muslim Arab women won the post of vice president of the federation, and this tripartite team will lead the federation for an entire year after assuming their positions next July and under difficult circumstances imposed by the Corona pandemic.

Shaimaa (26 years old) was born to a Tunisian father and a Sudanese mother, and she came to Britain in 2000 and studied at the University of London and obtained a master's degree in law. Shaima hopes that her victory will be a breakthrough for the victory for Muslims and all just causes.
