  • In the Rhône as in the Metropolis of Lyon, the incidence rate of Covid-19 has clearly increased in one week, proof that the circulation of the virus is high.

  • If this results in an increase in hospitalizations at the level of the department, the situation remains stable on the other hand in intensive care and in the establishments of Lyon.

    Explanations ...

Is a new wave of Covid-19 brewing in the Rhône, like what seems to be playing out in certain departments of the Paris region, in Pas-de-Calais and the Alpes-Maritimes?

Several epidemic monitoring indicators published daily by Public Health France suggest that the epidemic is gaining ground in the department.

But other data remains quite reassuring.

To allow you to see more clearly,

20 Minutes

offers you an update on the epidemiological situation in the Rhône based on the analysis of some important figures.

A sharply increasing incidence rate

This is, after fairly stable weeks, the major development of the past week and one of the figures that alert.

In the Rhône, but also in the Metropolis of Lyon, the incidence rate is clearly increasing.

Proof that the Covid-19 circulates much more within the population.

This rate (244 cases at the national level) amounts to 280 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the department and to 291 in the Metropolis after having remained several weeks below the level of 240 cases.

By way of comparison, the incidence rate is 407 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Pas-de-Calais and 470 in the Alpes-Maritimes, two departments where residents are confined every weekend.

The British variant in strength

Today in the Rhône, according to the mapping of Public Health France, the English variant represents about three quarters of new contaminations.

A constantly rising figure that worries since this virus is more contagious than the historic strain of SARS-CoV-2.

The latter only represents 11% of contaminations while the other variants remain in the minority.

Low vaccination coverage

Another not very reassuring data.

To date, only 2.6% of the inhabitants of the Rhône have received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine and 6.8% a single dose, according to the latest Public Health report.

Figures very low two months after the start of the vaccination campaign which can be explained in part by a shortage of doses delivered to France.

The doubts around the AstraZeneca vaccine, which finally led Emmanuel Macron to suspend its use on Monday, are likely to weigh on the delays in vaccination.

Despite the accelerator promised by the government, 40% of people aged 75 and over, the most exposed to the virus, received one dose of vaccine (38% in the Rhône) and 22% two doses.

However, doctors, scientists and politicians agree on one point: the vaccine must limit the serious and fatal forms of the disease and good vaccination coverage among the population will reduce the impact of the virus in the long term. .

Hospitalizations on the rise in the Rhône

Over the past seven days, the number of Covid + patients hospitalized in the Rhône has increased, according to Public Health France, from 878 people admitted to a hospital on March 8 to 922 on March 15.

In the Lyon metropolitan area, the situation, which has been stable for many weeks, has hardly changed.

The CHU de Lyon now has 349 hospitalized coronavirus patients, four more than a week ago.

The real situation remains at a high level

In intensive care units, the number of Covid + patients received has not changed in one week, whether in the Rhône hospitals or those managed by the Hospices Civils de Lyon, according to the weekly update made by the CHU de Lyon this Tuesday.

The intensive care occupancy rate remains high, however, above 96%, these services having to deal with both severe forms of Covid and patients with other severe pathologies.

Caution remains in order

This stability of epidemic monitoring indicators in hospitals, although still located at a high level, confirms that the situation is still under control in hospitals in our territory.

But, once again, vigilance remains in order.

The upward trend in the incidence rate observed today could indeed cause tensions in the hospital in the next fortnight, if we rely on the first two waves of epidemics.

A period of fifteen days was then observed between the progression of the circulation of the virus within the population and the arrival in number of worrying or severe forms in a hospital environment.
