Leipzig (dpa) - The handball players of the SC DHfK Leipig are pushing ahead with their personnel planning for the coming season.

As the Bundesliga team announced on Wednesday evening, backcourt player Niclas Pieczkowski (31) will leave the DHfK at the end of the season and switch to a league rival.

It is not yet clear which club it is.

Pieczkowski won the European Championship with the German national team in January 2016 and moved from TuS N-Lübbecke to the Leipzig team in the summer of the same year, where he quickly slipped into the role of a top performer.

To date, the middle man has played 112 Bundesliga games for the green-whites, in which he scored 288 goals.

In his five years for the DHfK, however, injuries repeatedly threw him back.

«We have given very intensive thought to the squad planning and have come to the decision not to extend Niclas' contract.

This step is very difficult, but we now have the chance to set new impulses for the team in the playmaker position », managing director Karsten Günther is quoted in the club announcement.

"Niclas has made a significant contribution to establishing ourselves in the Bundesliga," said coach André Haber in recognition of the contributions made by the 41-time German national player.
