Prosecutor Stina Sjöqvist has decided to close the investigation.

Eight boys have been suspected but the evidence has not been enough.

- Partly it is about boys who are under 15 years old and partly it is word for word, says Stina Sjöqvist who on Tuesday announced that the preliminary investigation will be closed.

Felt sick

It was in May last year that SVT Västernorrland was able to tell that several different accounts with nude photos appeared on Snapchat.

The pictures were alleged to represent girls in Härnösand and Sundsvall and the flow of pictures was driven by a studied layout that could be compared to a pyramid scheme.

Girls who were hanged told that their lives were turned upside down overnight.

Some no longer dared to go to school while others told police investigators that they were even considering taking their own lives.

Young people in interrogation

It also turned out to be common for young people to share nude photos between friends, but that they appeared online via several accounts.

Since then, the police have investigated what happened.

Up to 20 girls had been exposed and eight boys were suspected of being responsible for the spread.

The police have held interrogations, seized mobile phones and had contact with Snapchat.

But without anyone being held accountable.

- We have not been able to prosecute anyone, but it has been a point in itself that society reacted strongly and that those who were suspects were summoned for questioning.

This is an important signal, says Sjöqvist.

Fake pictures

In order to gain access to the current accounts on Snapchat, it has been a requirement that you have either been able to contribute with additional nude photos or market the account with "shoutouts".

Anyone who sent a picture with information about who they represent got access to the account.

The police investigation has shown that half of the alleged nude photos that were posted were fake.

The designated girl in the picture simply did not appear in the picture, but it was still enough for the spread of rumors to start.

Behaviors online

Even if the police investigation is closed down, the Sundsvall police will continue to work with young people's vulnerability online.

Stina Sjöqvist believes that the event also actualizes how both young people and adults behave online.
