25 April 2019 There is a new alarm in Mozambique for the imminent arrival of cyclone Kenneth, expected on the northern coasts of the country, while it has not yet recovered from the passage of Idai, which just over a month ago devastated the city of Beira, causing hundreds of deaths, tens of thousands of displaced people and a cholera epidemic.

"Although floodwaters have receded in most areas affected by Idai, access is still a challenge as infrastructure has been severely compromised," said UN World Food Program spokesman Herve Verhoosel.

"Another storm would be a severe blow to the people of Mozambique and make it more difficult to reach all areas."

The tropical cyclone Kenneth, which has already left its mark on the Comoros islands, where it has caused the death of three people;

in a few hours it will reach the coast of Mozambique.

The UN agency for the coordination of humanitarian aid Ocha has launched an appeal: "There is a significant risk of flooding where heavy rains will occur, the winds will be strong enough to cause devastation", reads a statement in which it is urges people living in landslide and flood risk areas to seek refuge in safer areas.

According to the UN, more than 700 thousand people are at risk, especially in the province of Cabo Delgado.

Augusta Maita, director of civil protection of Mozambique, declared a state of alert and announced operations for the evacuation, even forced if necessary, of populations at risk.

To save the population, helicopters and boats used in Beira for relief will also be used after the passage of cyclone Idai in mid-March.
