Hanover (dpa / lni) - The number of corona patients in Lower Saxony's intensive care units has risen again.

On Tuesday there were 233 Covid-19 patients in an intensive care unit in Lower Saxony, the previous day there were 223. In the 119 clinics in the country, a total of almost 2000 intensive care beds for adults and around 240 intensive care beds for children are available.

According to the Ministry of Health, around 80 percent of adults and around 60 percent of children are currently occupied.

A total of 877 patients infected with the virus were treated in the clinics between the Harz and the North Sea on Tuesday.

In mid-January, around 1,400 Covid 19 patients were treated in clinics in Lower Saxony, 290 of them in intensive care units.

Because of the strain on the wards, the Hannover Medical School (MHH), for example, postponed planned operations.

The German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, DIVI, demanded an immediate return to lockdown in view of the current nationwide increase in the number of infections.

It is important to vaccinate over 50 and over 60 year olds quickly, said the intensive care physicians on Monday.

Then fewer people with Covid-19 would become seriously ill.
