Hagen (dpa / lnw) - After a shot at a police officer in Gevelsberg, the Hagen district court sentenced a 37-year-old to seven years and six months in prison.

A court spokesman confirmed this on Tuesday.

The defendant was stopped at the wheel of his car by a police checkpoint in May 2020.

When he learned a little later that the officers had been informed by radio about an open arrest warrant against him, he had grabbed a gun and shot a policeman in a targeted manner.

The officer was not seriously injured in the hit because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

After an initial silence, the German had admitted the act in the process.

He said he wanted to evade threatened arrest because he feared he would experience severe withdrawal symptoms while in custody.

In fact, large amounts of cocaine were later found in the man's blood.

The judges therefore assumed in the judgment that there was less criminal liability.

The verdict reads, among other things, on attempted manslaughter, dangerous physical injury and violation of the gun law.
