The mayor of Chicago (United States) Lori Lightfoot welcomed this Saturday that her city was able to respect "its long tradition" of dyeing the Chicago River green on the occasion of Saint Patrick's Day, reports

.

Because of the health crisis linked to the coronavirus, "we did not meet" to attend the operation, said the councilor on Twitter, wishing his citizens "a good Saint Patrick's weekend".

Happy St. Patrick's Day Weekend, Chicago!

Although we didn't gather, we were able to honor long-standing tradition by dyeing the Chicago River green, thanks to the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers.

If you're heading out today, make sure to mask up and watch your distance.

The councilor had finally given his agreement for the event to take place this Saturday, after it was canceled last year because of Covid-19 and serious hesitations on its continuation this year.

She hadn't specified the time, however, wishing to avoid the usual gathering of locals who came to watch the water change color.

The parade has been relocated

The mayor had deemed this type of grouping undesirable in the midst of a pandemic.

It has also relocated the Saint Patrick's Day parade to another district, traditionally organized each year in the city center.

The parade usually begins at noon, close to where the boats dump the dye into the river from 9 a.m.

This year, the dye was disseminated in the river from 7:10 am in order to limit any crowd.

The banks designed for the promenade were closed throughout the day on Saturday.

Passers-by keen to take photos of the emerald-green Chicago River were urged not to stop for too long and then quickly walk their way.

An inhabitant of the city spoke of an organization in the form of a "compromise" allowing "a little normalcy".

“I know we're on the cusp of something great,” said Lori Lightfoot.

Today marks a time when we will reopen the city by moving forward together ”.
