Berlin (dpa) - In the mask affair, the SPD is tightening the tone towards the Union.

The parliamentary manager of the SPD parliamentary group, Carsten Schneider, demanded in the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" (Monday) after a donation to the Suhl district in Thuringia became known, further education work from the Union immediately.

"After these new revelations, it is logical that a query from Laschet and Söder to the structures of the CDU and CSU for suspicious party donations, especially just below the notifiable limit," said Schneider, referring to the party leaders of the CDU and CSU, Armin Laschet and Markus Söder.

The Suhl district association had received a donation of 7,000 euros from a domestic company which, according to media reports, is said to have delivered masks to districts after mediation by CDU politician Mark Hauptmann.

Hauptmann resigned his Bundestag mandate on Thursday, the 36-year-old had previously come under fire after the media reported lobbying allegations against him.

The reports included advertisements from Azerbaijani agencies in the “Südthüringer Kurier” published by Hauptmann.

It later became known that Hauptmann is said to have conveyed corona protective masks from a Frankfurt company to districts.

The CDU MP Nikolas Löbel and the CSU MP Georg Nüßlein have left their parties because of questionable mask deals.

Löbel has also resigned from the Bundestag.

Nüßlein, on the other hand, only announced that he would not run for the Bundestag again in the autumn.
