Wuppertal / Herzogenaurach (dpa / lnw) - The automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler closes its plant in Wuppertal.

Around 670 jobs are affected, as the company announced on Monday in Herzogenaurach.

A company spokesman said that no viable solution had been found for maintaining the location where Schaeffler currently still produces rolling bearings for various industrial applications.

The West German Broadcasting Corporation had previously reported on it.

The closure of the Wuppertal site is part of a larger package of structural measures.

In total, Schaeffler plans to cut around 4,400 jobs in Germany, as the company announced last autumn.

Most of the job cuts should be completed by the end of 2022.

Schaeffler will now quickly start negotiations with the works council in Wuppertal on a reconciliation of interests for socially acceptable implementation in order to create clarity for all parties as quickly as possible, the company spokesman announced.

The employees affected by the closure should - as far as possible - be offered positions at other Schaeffler locations.

In addition, it is planned to maintain a smaller unit for service and sales activities in Wuppertal.
