It is important to say that violence in close relationships, which these honor crimes fall under, should have the same priority as everything we do now against organized crime, it should be seen as equivalent, I think, says Morgan Johansson in Morgonstudion.
Last year, stricter penalties were introduced for honor-related crimes and travel bans for children who are at risk of being divorced or genitally mutilated abroad.
Now another bill is being referred, where the government wants to increase the penalty scale for perpetrators with honor motives.
Motives of honor must be punished extra
- With the new law that we are working with now, we can put together a series of crimes that may in themselves give less punishment, but when you see it systematically and see that this is repeated and is part of an honor culture, then you could be convicted for a special crime of honor with a much stricter penalty scale, says Morgan Johansson.
This law on honor crimes would work much the same as the law on women's crimes, which made it possible to increase the penalty scale for that type of crime.
The bill will be presented during the year according to the Minister of Justice.
