Hamburg (dpa) - Because of the corona pandemic, Germany's large restaurant chains have received significantly less money in the coffers.

The sales of these companies dropped by 29.8 percent to around 10.7 billion euros in 2020 compared to the previous year, according to a market survey by the industry magazine Foodservice, which was published on Monday on the occasion of the digital version of the Internorga trade fair.

In 2019 there was an increase in sales of 6.1 percent.

It is about the hundred largest gastronomy companies with around 20,000 restaurants in Germany, which the industry magazine surveyed and estimated some of their sales.

It is noteworthy that fast food - called “Quick Service” in the industry - also took off, but less so than other gastro offers.

With delivery services, take-away stations and in some cases also with drive-in counters, this industry segment got through the crisis relatively well.

This applies, for example, to McDonald's and Burger King, the two largest restaurant chains in Germany.

The German subsidiary of Yum!

(KFC, Pizza Hut) and Subway did not do as badly as other market participants.

LSG (Lufthansa Service Holding AG), which does business with on-board catering for passenger planes and event catering, was hit hard.

Autobahn Tank & Rast GmbH from Bonn, which offers catering at motorway service stations, also fell under the wheels and dropped significantly in terms of sales.

North Sea slipped out of the "Top Ten".

Because of the pandemic, the restaurants were closed for almost a third of last year, but food for pick-up and delivery could still be offered.
