Mainz (AP) - The good result of the SPD in the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate is, according to the assessment of political scientist Jürgen Falter, mainly due to Prime Minister Malu Dreyer - and no submission for the party in the federal government.

«That was clearly a success for Malu Dreyer.

Without them, the party would not have done so well, ”said the professor from Mainz University of the German Press Agency.

«Olaf Scholz is not the top candidate who would have exactly the same qualities as Malu Dreyer.

He doesn't seem so vulnerable, he may have the toughness, but with Malu Dreyer it's still the great charm and concern that brings her up, »said Falter.

«Scholz is a completely different type.

I can't imagine that he'll pull that out, especially not with a party that is starting again to throw clubs between his legs, "said Falter, referring to the debate about the social course towards sexual and other minorities in the SPD .

"The only hope the SPD can have is that the CDU will continue to smear," said Falter.

"Corona played a role in the CDU's performance because, of course, the breakdowns that happen are primarily attributed to the main actors - Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn and Chancellor Angela Merkel."

However: "If a larger part of the population is vaccinated, maybe even before the summer holidays, and the pandemic is at least neutralized or largely defeated, then the CDU can of course collect points again."

The traffic light coalition in Rhineland-Palatinate was actually inconspicuous, said Falter.

"She did not do any major experiments - for example, the landscape was not paved with wind turbines as the Greens would have wanted."

"If Malu Dreyer continues with this cautious policy of small steps and moderate reforms, she has a good chance of getting through this legislative period unscathed," the political scientist predicted.

"And if she were to be the top candidate again, the chances are good that she will be elected again."
